Course Description

Media, in its various forms, is a product of human creativity, innovation, and the continuous quest to improve communication, share knowledge, and entertain.

This IB German course examines human ingenuity and the human response to all things related to communicating information

Let's start with an overview of what is included in this IB German media course:

  • Print media: newspapers, magazines, books, pamphlets, posters, flyers, ads on public transportation, billboards (these are text types that you can be asked to create on the Paper 1 IB writing exam, and some of these will be presented to you on the Paper 2 reading comprehension exam).
  • Broadcast media: television, TVs, broadcast cameras, studio equipment (lighting, microphones, mixing consoles, satellite dishes, etc.)
  • Film: feature films, Hollywood films, artistic short films, documentaries, and animated films.
  • Radio: radios, radio companies, transmitters, antennas, sound studios, microphones, etc.
  • Digital media includes websites, social media, blogs, vlogs, podcasts, streaming services, and phone apps, as well as the IT tools needed, such as computers, smartphones, tablets, servers, cameras, microphones, and various software tools.

From an educational perspective, it's very important for students to become media literate. This includes understanding how media is created, the intentions behind different types of media content, and how to discern credible sources from misinformation. Media literacy education empowers you to navigate the digital landscape safely and responsibly, making informed decisions as you consume and share information.

There are several benefits to investigating media and its constant presence in our lives. We must be aware of how the media impacts our health, our political beliefs, and our opinions about everything from video games to nutrition. If we are aware that it influences us, then we can stay in better control of who we are, who we want to be, and how we want to participate in relationships, our community, society, and the global environment. Media also provides a window into different cultures, lifestyles, and social issues, helping you become more aware of the world. This exposure can foster empathy and understanding of diverse perspectives.

On a personal level, it's critically important to notice your interactions and the time you spend engaged in media-driven activities. Interacting with media can shape your judgment of your identity and how you perceive yourself. Studies have shown that exposure to various forms of media, including social media, television, and movies, can influence your body image, self-esteem, and values. Understanding these impacts can help you develop a healthy self-image and improve your critical thinking skills regarding the media content you consume.

Understanding some advertising techniques and the persuasive power of media can help you become a more discerning consumer. This knowledge can protect you from being unduly influenced by marketing tactics and encourage more thoughtful consumption habits.

So much access to media gives you the power to express yourself and your opinions to the world. This course may also encourage you to consider potential media-related career paths in journalism, radio, TV, digital marketing, film production, graphic design for advertising, software, web design, IT, social media management, and the postal service, etc.

Come enter the very compelling world of media.
