Course Description

This is your 9-week course for quarter 3 that will help you prepare and practice for a successful IB Language B Internal Assessment (Oral Exam). Here is what's included:

  • A section with specific videos provides exam tips for SL and HL students.
  • You will find many photographs in each IB category to use for practice. Every color photo includes a title and a caption to help guide the conversation. IB themes are used to organize the photo collection and each section begins with a thematic poster showing the possible topics for that particular theme. You are required to discuss two different themes from two different categories during your recorded oral exam.
  • Included in each theme section are practice questions, as well as model answers.
  • You will use the provided "extended" IA templates to write a script matching the required IB oral exam format (2020-2025).
  • When you are ready, there are speaking games for you to improve your spontaneous speaking skills.

All resources for getting prepared for a successful IB IA are located here. You will bring your vocabulary and grammar knowledge into the exam and fit them into the expected format and time requirement.

Please click the "Complete & Continue" button at the bottom of the screen and move on to the next lesson. Watch and read every lesson until you get to the "Extended IA Script Template" assignment. Then, you can use your old scripts combined with some of the posted questions and answers to create a full 15-minute oral script. Don't forget to study the scoring rubric for your level so you can adjust your script to include all the characteristics in the highest marking bands.

Once your script is finished, turn it in to your teacher for feedback. At that time SL students need to participate in the speaking practice activities, vocabulary practice, and grammar skills. HL students should write more throughtful, clever and more detailed statements about the connection between their literature and the IB themes in connection with German culture.

Once you have your script back with feedback, make the suggested changes and create a new final version of your practice script. Spend every class period practicing with a classmate who plays the role of teacher in your script and then switch papers, where you take the role of teacher while your classmate practices their script.

Your goal is not to memorize the script. If you try to do that and then get nervous during the recorded exam, you will likely forget everything you memorized and end up sitting there silently or stumbling along with incoherent sentences. Instead, switch up the order of your sentences, add new ones, and do the practice games using your two favorite topics. Loosen up! Your oral needs to sound like a relaxed, interesting and intelligent conversation.
